101 Steps to a Simpler Life | CALM | Scoop.it

Today I read about a study regarding information processing and memory decrements  by age.  What I found interesting was that the researchers did a simulation (using big data analytics) which found that aging brains, because they know so many more words and concepts than younger brains, do take longer to find a word than younger brains but not due to aging, due to the time it takes for the brain to sift through all the words it knows to find the right one.

Perhaps, living more simply could slow brain aging using the argument that less is more and small is beautiful.

I have always believed everyone is a leader in their own right and it is a choice to tap into and exercise leadership qualities be it for your family, your neighborhood, civic group, kids sports teams, professional group, personal growth, or unexpectedly helping a friend or stranger in a time of need. No title is necessary to be considered a leader and indeed it is an exciting proposition for one to elicit their leadership qualities to contribute to the greater good, personally or professionally.

Achieve Optimum Health in 2014 | HFM | Houston Family Magazine | CALM | Scoop.it

Optimum health, which flourishes by nurturing every aspect of self, yields benefits not only for the individual, but also for society, as well as for the environment. It’s time we start establishing goals for achieving this kind of health, just as we create goals for developing and maintaining our personal wealth. Rather than focusing on  money and property, we could work to possess mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being.

It may sound overwhelming, but optimum health is an attainable goal, if you take small steps.  We asked friends of Houston Family Magazine and experts in their respective fields to suggest things our readers could do in 2014 to change, improve or enhance their minds, bodies and souls.    Pick and choose one or more idea from each category, put them on the calendar, and see them through. You’ll be well on your way to optimum health in the New Year!

Strengthen the Connection Between Your Brain and Heart

Strengthen the Connection Between Your Brain and Heart | CALM | Scoop.it
Your brain and heart have the ability to communicate with each other and they always do to a certain extent. This connection can be strengthened and developed
Dr. Amy Fuller's insight:

I like theses instructions for increasing the connection between head and heart:

Quick Coherence® Technique:

  • Heart Focus: Shift your attention to the area of the heart and breathe slowly and deeply.
  • Heart Breathing: Keep your focus in the heart by gently breathing – five seconds in and five seconds out – through your heart. Do this two or three times.
  • Heart Feeling: Activate and sustain a genuine feeling of appreciation or care for someone or something in your life. Focus on the good heart feeling as you continue to breathe through the area of your heart.

Practical Tips for Productive Living

The concept of ‘the simple life’ means different things to different people.  In my mind, simple living equates to capitalizing on the fundamentals that truly make you happy and purging the needless remainders.  It’s the notion of creating tranquility in your life by eliminating various roadblocks of clutter so you can concentrate your time and attention on the people and effects that matter most.

Alas, the actual process of ‘simplifying’ is not easy.
